What makes a transformer a replacement candidate?

A matching voltage ratio is the starting point. Compare the existing transformer and proposed replacement on the same rating basis before reserving equipment. Send the nameplate or one-line by email when available; an initial conversation can begin with MVA, voltages and your required date.

What we need to quote a transformer

Start with capacity, phase, frequency, high- and low-side voltages, duty, site, and needed-on-site date. To confirm a technical match, we may also need BIL, impedance, cooling, vector group, neutral and taps, fluid, losses, harmonics, site conditions, sound limits, and shipping constraints.

  • Capacity: base kVA/MVA and every cooling-stage rating; do not substitute MW for MVA.
  • Voltage: nominal and maximum-system values for each winding, plus generator terminal voltage where applicable.
  • Insulation and system: BIL, grounding, vector or winding connection, phase displacement, impedance and its MVA/tap/temperature basis.
  • Regulation: LTC or DETC range, steps, control requirements, and parallel-operation constraints.
  • Site: minimum/maximum ambient, altitude, seismic, wind, sound, footprint, terminals, access, route, and installation state.
  • Evidence: one-line, nameplate, outline, schematic, test report, losses, oil/fluid data, maintenance and preservation records when available.

Can J&J source a transformer outside the listed inventory?

Yes. Email the required MVA or kVA, high- and low-side voltages, quantity and needed-on-site date. J&J reviews additional sourcing options for the requirement. Supply capability does not establish that a particular configuration is in stock.

Does a transformer listed at 230 kV necessarily have a 34.5 kV secondary?

No. The high-side voltage class does not identify the low-side or tertiary voltage. Use the exact-ratio pages or the listing's full voltage description, then request the records for that unit.

Why are BIL and impedance important?

BIL supports insulation coordination. Impedance affects fault current, regulation, reactive behavior, protection, and parallel operation. Both must match the system studies and purchaser specification.
